Humanitarian Help Knows no
Boundaries
SAWA, The Syrian-American Women's Charitable Association, is an independent,
non-partisan and
non-sectarian organization, committed to assist the poor, and the ailing. It is equally committed to promote humanitarian
cooperation among the peoples of the Syrian Arab Republic and the United States of America.
SAWA, was incorporated in District of Columbia on January 25, 1993. It is exempt from
federal income tax under section 501 [c] [3] of the Internal Revenue Service. All
contributions to SAWA are tax deductible as allowed by law.
Since its founding in 1993 by Mrs.Sawsan Khayat Al-Moualem, wife of the formal
Syrian Ambassador to the United States, and
a group of dedicated Syrian American women in the greater Washington area, SAWA has succeeded in attracting widespread support. In
addition to its National Central office, it has, at present, four state chapters in
Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio and Michigan, and
expects the establishment of other state branches in the near future.
All officers and all members of SAWA are volunteers, who receive no monetary compensation for their time or effort.
Mission
SAWA's main goal is to address the humanitarian needs of the
disadvantaged, the elderly, and the sick in all parts of the Syrian Arab Republic, without regard for political, racial, or
denominational consideration. It promotes public awareness of those needs, solicits public
support and contributions, sponsors fund-raisers and channels humanitarian aid in the form of
financial assistance, food, clothing, educational
materials, and medical supplies and equipment to registered non-governmental welfare organizations in Syria.
SAWA provides an organized framework through which Syrian Americans, and Americans of Arab descent can direct their
efforts to help the less advantaged in their homeland.
SAWA not only draws on Syrian-Americans and other Arab Americans, but also
engenders the support of all those who
share its humanitarian concerns, which should have no boundaries.
Funding & Support
SAWA's main source of income is variety of annual fund-raising
activities sponsored by the Central Committee in Washington, D.C., and by the State Chapters. These
activities include Iftar dinners
during the holy month of Ramadan, Syrian handicraft bazaars, and participation in bazaars organized by other
charitable associations.
Anyone can donate to SAWA, however if you would like to join our association you must be Syrian ( i.e. one of your parents can be Syrian ) or your spouse can be Syrian.
